Why I hid being a model & how it diminished my sense of self
The above shot was taken on one of my 1st shoots c. 1997. I was young, blond and knew I had just stepped into the start of something- at the time, I had no clue where it would lead.
Why did I hide being a model for so many years? It wasn’t that I exactly lied about it or felt any shame around it, but wearing the hat as a fitness professional for many years, I was afraid to claim it. I just left it out of most all conversations unless I was with someone in the industry or a scheduling conflict had arisen because of it.
The reason I am sharing this with you is that there was always an incongruence that I felt deep inside. (You maybe can resonate with this feeling too?) Kind of like a thorn that every so often gets snagged- then ‘ouch’ there it was. The underlying issue for me was never truly feeling sure of myself, confident in who I was or comfortable in my own skin. There it was again- that nasty little self-esteem deficiency. If there was a pill for that, I probably would’ve taken it!
I was recently interviewed by Tena Pettis on the Clique podcast, where we talked all about exactly that! I revealed a little bit more of myself, and why for so long, I was hiding out. I hid being a model. I hid my desires for beauty and style. I hid the fullest expression of myself.
When I say ‘hid’ I mean I wasn’t forthcoming or open about these things. It was like they didn’t exist for me… because when you devalue yourself, you kinda don’t.
I was so hung up that people would doubt my professionalism or intelligence as a trainer if they knew I wasn’t ONLY a trainer. As if I were cheating on my fitness career. Seriously, self-doubt and a lack of self-worth can play funny mind games on you- and this was one of them!
I’m sure you’ll get a lot out of this interview, so don’t forget to let me know what your biggest takeaways & aha’s were. Tena is an expert interviewer in disguise, chatting it up like an old girlfriend, and her approach really made me comfortable sharing a vulnerable side of myself. Bottom line: I was afraid to claim it. To stand up and own who I really was. Did I not feel worthy? Beautiful enough? Credible? Talented? Likely all of them at some point in time. To hide a very important part of my life was diminishing my inner strength and power, and squashing my sense of self, as if dimming my light and radiance more and more each passing day.
Today I am more than grateful to combine my two ‘worlds’. I get to use my experience in the modeling industry along with my coaching expertise to empower women like YOU to create an image you love, to gain visibility and gain the courage to use your voice. Sometimes sharing our message, our mission, requires us to show off a little and that’s ok! (most of my clients actually really enjoy this part once they give themselves permission!)
