My Top 3 Tips to boost Self-esteem through Style
Not feeling great about yourself? Maybe you should change clothes.
Loving how you look can change everything! How you dress yourself is a reflection of how you feel about yourself. Did you realize, though, that you can change how you feel about yourself by changing how you dress?
As you read this right now- STOP.
- How are you feeling?
- What are you wearing?
Think there is a connection there? Of course there is! Everything affects everything. Think it sounds crazy? Read on!
I’ll be the first to admit that getting dressed can be an emotionally charging daily event, especially if you’re not completely confident in yourself, proud of your image, or clear on what your personal style even is. Still, I want to encourage you to get dressed every day even when you don’t have to. It can change not only how you work, but how you run your life.
I spoke at the Women In Networking Speed Speakers Event (Minneapolis,MN) recently about how you can change how you feel by changing how you dress. Now this is a multi-layered topic, so I couldn’t exactly do it justice in one small talk, so I’m sharing my top 3 tips to do it on your own! I want you to be fully prepared to do this for yourself on a daily basis because it can change everything, if you let it.
1. Dress for how you want to feel. I call this fake it till you make it. For instance, if you want to feel more confident, literally dress the part of a confident person. Identify how a confident person would dress to you. You must be comfortable in your skin and in the clothes you wear because that shows. People see it. They feel it. They respond to it.
If you want to feel more excited and connected to what you’re doing, you must get dressed! It’s a reliable and simple tactic to light a fire under your A**! and get yourself going when you might need a little push. Even when you’ve got little things to do that you’ve been putting off, getting dressed for how you want to feel can help you feel more professional and ‘on.’ It changes your energy and your vibration.
2. Dress to impress yourself! Only wear what you love, all the way down to your you-know-whats! I suggest this: ask yourself ‘would I be impressed if I witnessed myself walking into a room right now?’ If not, go back in that closet and switch something out.
When you are turned on by you, you’ll notice a difference in how you hold yourself, how you walk, and talk. That is your presence, your energy. Other people see it and feel it too. It actually empowers other people to be in the presence of a women who loves how she looks and owns it! It is about the energy you bring to the room AND taking responsibility for it!!
Don’t forget about the little things- yes, your undies! Your foundation makes a big difference in how you present yourself. I’ll admit, for a long time I was so consumed with my outer image, yet underneath it all, I was wearing the oldest, dingiest, unappealing undies! That is a confidence killer for sure. Take the extra step and make sure you got well-fitting, well-kept undergarments. It’s basic self-care that goes a long way. Trust me. I’ve made this mistake too.
3. Focus on what you love about you. Dressing in a way that highlights what you love most will turn up the volume on your self- love dial! (People will notice that too!) This goes back to the good ole Law of Attraction. What you focus on expands. If you love your legs, be bold, and show off your legs! Shorter skirts, shorts, slim fitting pants- load up your wardrobe with pieces that best suit you. (see my client’s before & after photos below as an example)
By default, the more focus you place on the parts you love, the less goes to what you don’t love. You can’t think good & bad at the same time. So I suggest choosing good & choosing love. You will feel good & grow to love who you are even more.
These are just a few techniques that I’ve used with my clients, and on myself. I, too, still have those days that call for a little TLC. If you’re a women business owner, you likely are the face of your brand- your own spokesperson. Your image is your storefront. You are a walking advertisement! No one can sell your business better than you. So don’t you owe it to yourself to feel the best you can and put your best self forward?
